Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) is conducting a review of the Core Skills Occupations List and is seeking input from employers and industry groups on the draft lists. This review is a crucial step in implementing the Migration Strategy introduced last year. Employers utilizing the employer-sponsored visa program are encouraged to submit their feedback before the deadline of 31 May 2024.

The upcoming Skills in Demand visa will replace the subclass 482 Temporary Skills Shortage visa and will offer three targeted pathways:

  • Specialist Skills Pathway (for workers earning over $135,000, excluding trade occupations)
  • Core Skills Pathway
  • Skills in Demand Pathway (for workers earning under $70,000).

JSA is responsible for providing advice and recommendations regarding Australia’s labour market and in-demand occupations/skills to the Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs for the inclusion of occupations on relevant occupation lists. Currently, JSA is consulting on the Core Skills Pathway for occupations with salaries ranging from $70,000 to $135,000.

The draft Core Skills Occupations List is open for consultation and includes three categories:

  • On List: Occupations expected to be included on the new Core Skills Occupations List
  • Off List: Occupations unlikely to be included
  • Consultation List: Occupations flagged for further targeted consultation.
